Somehow, when Kevin O'Brien was here yesterday, the conversation got to those songs you hate because once you hear them - or once someone even mentions them - they're stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
Kevin was devilishly good at naming some (what a cruel, cold man...) so we decided to make a list of those song earworms that, once they've wiggled into your brain they're nearly impossible to dislodge. We all agreed that these had to be the sort that, by the time you could change the radio station, it was too late. They couldn't be the kinds you can live with. These are the kind that you need to napalm your mind to eradicate.
We thought it'd be easy to come up with a Top Ten, but customers and phone calls and 'stuff' got in the way. Here's what we came up with while Kev was in the shop:
Disney's "It's a Small World After All" (we all agreed)
"Candy Man" - anyone's version (we all agreed)
"Winchester Cathedral" (one of Kevin's insideous votes) by the New Vaudeville Band
"Stay Awhile" by the Bells (none of the rest of us knew this one but it made Kevin's body flinch)
The Carpenter's "Close to You" (one of JB's candidates, though Kev said he could deal with it)
"Band on the Run" - the whole damn album says Kevin, but especially that "Admiral Halsey" song
"Theme from Gilligan's Island" (we agreed that theme songs had to be fair game)
"Girl from Impanema" was nominated by JB but Kev vetoed it
By today, with Fran's input, we'd added these:
Bobby McFarrin's 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' was Fran's first addition and Amber groans in agreement
OOPS, I Did it Again was Amber's second nominee from the time she worked in a music store
Kenny Loggins' 'Footloose' was Fran's second nomination (although sometimes, it's okay)
Amber's second is 'I've Got a Fang' from They Might Be Giants
'Muskrat Love' was Fran's third
'Jessie's Girl' was her fourth, although Adele thinks it's just fine
'Que Sera Sera' was nominated by JB's thoughful wife Gretchen (he's been cursing her all day)
Yes - we're evil!
So whaddya think? Any we missed?
