I have a dead bird on the cover of my book, MISSING PERSONS. I think it looks cool. I hear from some people though that my mystery about a woman in the midst of a divorce when her husband dies under strange circumstances doesn't seem like a "dead bird on the cover" type mystery. Apparently, the fact that there's a dead bird makes people think my book is about sadism, or animal cruelty or something. There are some pretty screwed up people out there.
So, the bird is sleeping. Really. He is taking a nap. Any moment now he will get up and fly away. And when you get past the bird you can find out about Kate Conway, the freelance Chicago based TV producer who is trying to exploit the family of a missing girl for a TV show, while dealing with the mistress of her dead husband and the cop who thinks Kate is the reason her husband is dead. And you can find out why a dead (whoops, sleeping) bird is on the cover.
And on the next book cover - naked women, live sex and cats... all alive. I promise.
